„Lost and Stay“. Exhibition during the winter open doors at Baumwollspinnerei Leipzig, 2014
During the winter open doors in Leipzig, the series „Heroines“ was combined for the first time with new paintings depicting destroyed or forgotten monuments in former Yougoslavia. Through this combination the two series of works, one hanging opposite of the other, could enter into a dialogical situation.
While the „Heroines“ series explores the topic of heroism, the series depicting the monuments explores questions of representation and the general purpose of monuments as such.
The motives chosen for both series are based on photographs that are folded and crumpled. In a first step a black and white copy from these templates is made, which is afterwards copied again, this time in colour. The difference in the colouring and the colour intensity of the copies is traceable into the than executed paintings, but was also documented through work studies and a wide array of arcchived copies. By using this special technique, the paintings resulting from it have to be read. The proportions and the facial features are dissolved into multiangular surfaces, ressembling architecture, which in turn binds them back to the other series that is depicting actual, although experimental, architectural monuments.
